Internships with Braden

An internship in another country is a unique opportunity for young people to improve their English, discover a new culture and meet new people. Interns will become a member of a family, form part of a company and face the challenge of adapting to a new way of life that is completely different from their own. In the first week of the programme interns attend English classes (three hours a day) to prepare their adaptation into the workplace.

Candidates need to understand that their overall experience in another country will depend to a great extent on their attitude. Becoming part of a family and a team is a important challenge and interns need to be ready to embrace their new life at home and at work. They have the same responsibilities as in their own country; interns need to follow the family’s rules and be an exemplary and applied member of staff.

Double effort

Internships mean that students have to make a double effort: dealing with both a new job and coming to terms with a different language. The Programme Coordinator will is hand to ensure that the work placement runs smoothly and acts as a point of contact between the trainee and the company.

Candidates should try to take part in all possible activities at work and at home. Interns need to be independent and should be able to “stand on their own two feet” with regard to daily routines: getting up, making meals, arriving on time at work and engaging with new people.

Basic guidelines

  • Time-keeping – You should be at work 10 -15 minutes before you are due to start.
  • Being responsible – You must comply with work schedules and fulfil your work commitments. You should be in optimum conditions to carry out your assigned tasks.
  • Being professional – You must wear appropriate clothes for your job and look professional.
  • Being respectful – You must respect safety regulations, company rules and your fellow colleagues. You should carry out your job to the best of you capabilities with a positive attitude. You should be aware that other colleagues may be busy and you should be patient.

The candidates

The ideal candidate should be open-minded, sociable and ready to face new challenges. It is important that both parents and teachers decide on whether a student is suitable for the programme.  Participants should be sufficiently mature to adapt to a new language, customs, routines and responsibilities that could very different from their own.

Interns come home with a valuable work experience in English. They have matured as a person and have learnt to live in a different cultural environment.  They are more capable of dealing with the multicultural world we live in, able to interact with people from around the world and with experience in an international work market.
